This project involved the installation of green roof systems over the existing Panmure Bus Interchange eastbound platform. The green roof is approximately 70 metres in length and is designed to collect and redistribute rainwater to sustain the vegetation.
The Airey structural team offered advice and assessed the existing structure, and ensured that the proposed new loads would be kept to a minimum, thus limiting the need for any demolition or remedial works to the existing structure.
The intention from the outset of this project was to achieve maximum environmental benefit with minimal demolition and waste and to do this without obstructing daily use of the busy transport hub.
The potential demonstrated by this trial is huge. If sustainable green roof systems were to be installed on the roofs of the thousands of bus stop shelters across the greater Auckland region, the total carbon sink benefit and environmental enhancement would be significant.
